CSUN Anime Club: Taiyoo Taiyoo Anime!
|
MikomiCon Events are overseen by a standing committee of the CSUN Anime Club: Taiyoo Taiyoo Anime. The Club originally founded in 2001 began hosting MikomiCon in 2006. While the club meetings are limited to CSUN Students only, it was the mission of our founders that the club help spread our appreciation of the genre and with that goal has brought us MikomiCon, MikomiCore, and Otaku Rehab.
~Starting MikomiCon~
The club was first approached by Goldie Thomas, CEO of Write 4 Hope Charity, in winter 2005. Goldie shared that Write 4 Hope is a local charity that creates events to raise funds for their organization to benefit homeless and women's shelters. Her hope was that the CSUN Anime Club would be interested in organizing the event and hosting it at Cal State Northridge. At the same time club members were interested in helping at other local conventions as possible staff positions when Write 4 Hope contacted us. As in many things, it was all timing. After a few meetings between Write 4 Hope and the club Nick Kurachi, then Anime Club Vice-President, formed the MikomiCon Planning Committee which consisted of past and present Anime Club members and officers of Write 4 Hope. Since then we now include members from other schools and anime events.
~Spreading Mikomi~
In winter 2009 we decided to deliver something new. Host more events each year and make them affordable for attendees to attend along with all the other So-Cal events (of which there are many). MikomiCore can be considered the new name of the MikomiCon convention. Their similar names are intentional and it was made to differentiate the events. The noticeable changes are changing the date, cutting Friday, and moving the outdoor events inside; beyond that its the same fun. And it allows MikomiCon to become the parent organization of MikomiCore and Otaku Rehab.
~Breaking New Ground~
Breaking new ground is MikomiCon's Otaku•Rehab. Otaku•Rehab is a 1 day cosplay gathering in Newbury Park, CA (next to Thousand Oaks, CA off the 101 in Ventura County) scheduled for Saturday May 22nd. Otaku•Rehab is taking the Cosplay Gathering scene to the next level....all day long and into the night. Otaku•Rehab is hosting a night time dance. Our park has wonderful facilities allowing us to have what you have come to expect here in our local gatherings PLUS an indoor stage for our events which could include a masquerade, concert, who knows! AND once the sun sets you don't have to go home because the party is just getting started at the gymnasium where our dance will rock the building till 4th Meal.
Did we mention the free parking?
Or the free skate park? Air Gear anyone?
~Mikomi after 2010~
What? what? 2011, Are you kidding? lets get 2010 under our collective belt first, its still 2009 as of writing this. Re envisioning one event and starting a entirely new event in the same year is plenty for us right now. You can bet that MikomiCore and Otaku•Rehab will be backed by the MikomiCon Events Committee to continue into the future. We are always looking for help, so contact us.
